The Scoop - November 29, 2011

Update on 12-14-2011: The latest newsletter, Turtle Tracks - Winter 2011, is now available!

A fine hello to everyone out there from the wilds of Turtle Island Preserve. We have been in the midst of a very mild fall. At this time last year we were already experiencing temperatures in the single digits and there was persistent ice on all the roads. This recent weather has been spectacularly mild and it has allowed us the good fortune being able to accomplish lots of outdoor work. We simply cannot wait to share all our progress with you on your next visit.

Thanksgiving was especially interesting this year as one of our mares had a healthy little filly that we have yet to name. All the animals are doing well and fluffing up their winter fur to prepare for the coming cold.

Just because winter approaches doesn’t mean we aren’t still hard at work around the preserve. We have four helpful interns and a family of four living with us at this time. The extra hands have been greatly needed on all of our projects, including trail improvement, forest management and firewood preparation to name just a few.

The Fall Open House was a raging hit in September and TC Roberson High School, Hanger Hall School for Girls and Elon University have spent some time with us too. A few more school and college groups are on their way to visit before the year is through. And as always, we are already eagerly preparing for summer camp 2012!

Our other big news is that we are now an officially recognized 501c3 non-profit. We are hoping this will allow us to acquire grant funding and hopefully expand our scholarship program. Please spread the word about our unique camp.

We are still accepting submissions for the upcoming Turtle Tracks newsletter set to be distributed in mid-December. In the mean time, take good care and do good things!
